Ikebanas (Safe of Mind)
2024 – 2025

Mind-space is not a safer space. The mind of the Other is shaped by internalised structures that don't disappear inward. It operates by its own uncommon sense, outside the available maps, formed through experiences of exclusion and adaptation and the inevitable self-bricolage those experiences require.

The Ikebanas series externalises this interior through a method borrowed from ikebana as structural logic. Ikebana is built on asymmetry, on negative space as an active element, on the principle that materials are listened to rather than imposed upon. In that tradition the vessel participates in the composition and is never neutral. The ceramic bases in this series work the same way: organiclegged structures that carry their arrangements with provisional stability, made to hold yet disposed toward movement. They are the first compositional decision and they carry the emotional condition of each work.

What gets arranged on them is heterogeneous, drawn from different registers of experience: the intimate, the social, the physical. The emotional debris of the deconstructed experience of the Other. The materials are brought into relation without being resolved into a single statement. Some works are romantic in nature, others hold the taboo of feminine rage, grief, or the uncertain terms of intimacy and consent. Each work holds a different emotional occasion, a different tone. Taken together, is that the interior landscape of the Other can exist in general space without performing itself for legibility
